Smartphones are a part of the lives of individuals throughout the country including those in the state of Florida. Accordingly, it is not a big surprise that the makers of these phones are always striving to create a better product. The competition to come up with and implement improvements can sometimes result in accusations of theft. This has occurred several times between Apple and Samsung.
The most recent case arose after Apple accused Samsung of patent infringement on Galaxy smartphones and four other devices. According to Apple, its “Slide to Unlock” feature was taken by Samsung. So too was a tap-from-search technology. As a result of that alleged theft, Apple is seeking a $40 royalty from every Samsung device that uses software Apple says it conceived. Should Apple be successful, Samsung could find that it is out around $2 billion.
Samsung responded to the allegation by filing a counterclaim. In it, Samsung alleged that Apple used two of its ideas without permission on iPads and iPhones. One of those ideas is a wireless system that increases the speed at which data is sent and received.
As we mentioned above, this is not the first time the two tech giants have engaged in litigation. A decision in a previous case found Samsung guilty of infringing Apple patents. The decision, which has been appealed by Samsung, ordered that company to pay Apple around $900 million.
While sometimes businesses are able to resolve their disagreements outside of the courtroom, this does not appear to be the case in this instance. Jury selection for the case recently began. Though it is impossible to know the outcome it is certain that teams of lawyers for either side are working diligently to build a strong case.
