Building supply company expands in Orlando’s College Park

A New York-based building supply company has announced plans to expand its Orlando operations, a move that will required a bigger space and may add up to 10 jobs in 2013. It may represent a new phase of growth for a company that, until now, seems to have focused largely on East Coast markets.

MarJam Supply Co., which is headquartered in Farmingdale, New York, is moving from its present site in the industrial portion of south Orlando to roomier quarters on Orange Blossom Trail and Princeton Street on the west side of College Park. One reason the location was picked is that it is close to rail transport, which will make shipping easier.

Together, the city of Orlando and the state of Florida have arranged for $1.6 million in capital spending and about $30,000 in tax incentives for MarJam. The company is also applying to the state for a work-training grant.

MarJam’s chief counsel said the company’s expansion is “exceeding expectations” and that the company looks forward to continued growth in Orlando. Orlando mayor Buddy Dyer trumpeted the expansion as proof that “Orlando is increasingly being considered as a gateway to other parts of the world, particularly Latin America.”

Whether the Orlando site will become one of the 33 “supercenters” MarJam operates in 12 other states remains to be seen. Regardless, any evidence of a company deliberately picking Orlando as a place to grow and expand is positive news for our community.
